DESCRIPTION OF EVENT:   What has become SWLA’s premiere half marathon in Sulphur, LA all started with running for Jimbo. A group of woman runners calling themselves the SPAR Stars were training for a half marathon when one of their husbands was diagnosed with cancer.  Rather than travelling to run out of town, the SPAR Stars decided to “Run for Jimbo” and raise money for his family. The event was supported by the community and is now a fundraiser for other organizations and families.

 

This year’s beneficiary is Deb Boyles, who is fighting breast cancer, and the Sulphur High School Cross Country team. All proceeds from the one miler benefit Deb Boyles’ Kick Cancer fund. SHS Country team has volunteered as split timers along the route since 2010.

 

Running 13.1 miles is difficult, even for the trained participant. Running a mile is difficult for a cancer survivor. SWLA is encouraged to support this event by running, walking, donating, or cheering along the route.

 

ESTIMATE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: Half Marathon = 100, One Mile = 50

Runners participating in the half marathon are traveling from Texas, Mississippi, and 4 parishes in Louisiana.

One Miler                                $20 (12/1/13 – 01/31/14) / $25 (2/1/14 – 2/13/14) / $30 (2/14/14-2/15/14)

(Registration for this event is free for ages 5 years and younger.)

Half Marathon

Overall male and female; Overall Grand Masters male and female; top overall male and female runners in each age group: 19 years and younger, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70 and older.  Registered participants completing course within the 3.5 hour time limit will receive commemorative medal.

One Miler: Kick Cancer for Deb

Overall male & female. Registered participants completing course will receive a commemorative medal.

From Lake Charles

Travel west on I-10 toward Texas.  Take exit 23 for LA-108 (Cities Service Hwy.) Travel north on LA-108 to Maplewood Drive.  Turn right onto Maplewood Drive.  Take 2^nd left onto Center Circle or park in Maplewood School parking lot.

From Texas

Travel east on I-10 toward Lake Charles.  Take exit 23 for LA-108 (Cities Service Hwy.) toward Industries/Sulphur.  Keep left at the fork to continue toward LA-108 N.  Take next exit to merge onto LA-108 N.  Turn right at Maplewood Drive.  Take 2^nd left onto Center Circle or park in Maplewood School parking lot.
